The #1 reason why so many people struggle to get a good night’s sleep probably won’t come as a surprise, because it’s stress.

Life is more stressful than ever these days, and stress certainly makes it harder to sleep. And lack of sleep leads to—you guessed it—more stress.

It’s a vicious cycle most of us know all too well.

Stress causes a state of hyperarousal that keeps your brain “on high alert,” which can make it difficult to “power down” at night when it’s time to relax and fall asleep. It can also make it hard to fall back to sleep after waking up in the middle of the night.

To make matters worse, our schedules are often at odds with the natural rhythms that our bodies are biologically wired for. Artificial light and caffeine often have us working, playing and scrolling around the clock, which leads to more stress.

The stress hormone cortisol and the sleep hormone melatonin have an inverse relationship. When one hormone rises, the other falls.

Daylight naturally triggers the release of cortisol, which helps us wake up in the morning. When the sun goes, cortisol levels drop and your body releases melatonin, with levels peaking in the hours after midnight.

But when you’re chronically stressed and your cortisol levels are elevated, your body won’t produce the melatonin you need to get a good night’s sleep.

And as you get older and your melatonin levels decline, it becomes more and more difficult to get a restful, satisfying sleep.
